System Modeling

Scope

  • Generic modeling approaches for control oriented models, based on first principles and on experimental data.
  • Most important modeling blocks for mechanical, hydraulic, thermal, electric, and chemical systems.
  • Several case studies (mechanical, thermal, electric, etc.).
  • Model scaling, linearization, order reduction, and balancing.
  • Planning of experiments, linear and nonlinear parameter estimation techniques for "gray-box" models.
  • Analysis tools for linear and nonlinear systems.

Handouts and Q&A Forum
To share handouts and additional material, as well as to interact with the students and allow a Q&A forum, we use the Moodle platform. Once the student is enrolled in the lecture, the Moodle access is automatically granted.

Lectures
2 hours per week for 14 weeks on Wednesdays from 08:15 to 10:00. In addition to the on-campus lecture, there will be recordings organised by ETH (no livestream). The link can be found on Moodle. Please note that the use of the blackboard, which will not be transmitted online, is expected throughout the lectures.

Exercises
1 hour per week for 13 weeks. The exercise sets and the solutions are available on Moodle.

Office Hours
We offer the possibility to ask individual questions to Prof. Guzzella during office hours. Please contact the professor or the Head TAs to set a meeting.

The exercise sessions will be held in 6 smaller groups, spread across different timeslots. You must enrol in one of these via myStudies. Please note that due to limited capacity of the rooms, not enrolled students may be asked to leave if it is full.

Course Language
The lecture, the exercise sessions and the handouts (script, exercises, exam, additional material) are in english.
