Towards Cost- and Energy-Efficient Building Technology
Mission Statement
All modern societies require a sufficient supply of affordable and sustainable useful energy. The generation of this energy and its efficient usage can be greatly improved by advanced feedforward and feedback control-systems. The optimization of such systems requires appropriate dynamic models and mathematical optimization methods.
The combination of first principles from physics and mathematical rigor with engineering intuition and creativity are the key elements with which we pursue our main objective: to contribute towards a sustainable development in building technologies. Specifically, using and further developing the theory of building dynamics and controls we strive to increase the efficiency of the total building systems.

Monte Rosa Hut
The Monte Rosa Hut is a collaborative project designed with sustainability in mind. Using photovoltaic systems with large battery capacity, solar panels with hot-water reservoirs, and a cogeneration power plant, the Monta Rosa Hut can host up to 125 guests with minimal environmental impact. picture by Tonatiuh Ambrosetti |

RESCOM
The management of energy flows from and to multiple agents requires accurate design for obtaining maximum yield. The goal of our group is to create parametric models capable of describing arbitrary systems while being optimized with respect to the concurrent goals of high simulation speed. |

SAMBA
In future, smart buildings interact with the power grid. An optimal operation of the building services represent a significant opportunity for energy efficiency and cost reduction. Intelligent algorithms will manage the energy storages and shut off loads with little impact on occupants. Cogeneration units, photovoltaic plants or even an electric fleet car can be used to supply the grid with additional power. |
